Fort Wayne, IN – A serious late-night crash in Fort Wayne left one driver with life-threatening injuries and prompted a temporary road closure as investigators worked the scene.
According to the Fort Wayne Police Department, officers responded around 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 6, 2026, to a two-vehicle crash on Airport Expressway just south of Lower Huntington Road.
Police say an SUV was found off the roadway, while a second vehicle, identified as an Audi coupe, came to rest against a guardrail. The female driver of the SUV was reported to be in stable condition. The male driver of the Audi was found unconscious and suffering from life-threatening injuries. Both were transported to a local hospital.
Preliminary findings indicate the SUV was traveling along Airport Expressway when it was struck from behind by the Audi, which investigators say was traveling at a high rate of speed.
Authorities believe speed and alcohol may have been contributing factors in the crash, though the investigation remains ongoing.
Due to the severity of the incident, the Fort Wayne Police Department’s Fatal Accident Crash Team took over the investigation, with assistance from the Air Support Unit for aerial documentation.
Airport Expressway was temporarily closed in both directions near Lower Huntington Road while crews processed the scene.
No additional details have been released.
