Joliet, IL – A Joliet Central High School student is earning recognition after taking first place in a regional welding competition and securing a major scholarship opportunity.

According to Joliet Township High School officials, junior Salvador Figueroa won the competition hosted by StarCon over the weekend, outperforming students from multiple schools across the region. Competitors included participants from Joliet Central, Joliet West, Grundy Area Vocational Center, Lockport, Wilco Area Career Center, Crete-Monee, Lincoln-Way, Plainfield East, Elgin, and West Aurora high schools.

Figueroa’s first-place finish earned him a $20,000 scholarship to attend welding school at StarCon, along with additional tools and equipment to support his training.

The event highlighted the technical abilities and craftsmanship of students enrolled in career and technical education programs throughout the Chicago area.

School officials say Figueroa’s dedication extends beyond the competition. After completing the event, he reportedly went straight to work, reflecting a strong commitment to his trade.

“He is such a hardworking and dedicated welder,” said Nicole Gubbins. “Right after competing, he headed straight into work. We are incredibly proud of him and all that he has accomplished.”

Educators say the achievement underscores the growing opportunities available in skilled trades and the strength of vocational programs within Joliet Township High School District.
