Decatur, IL – A Decatur man is facing multiple charges after an April incident in which he allegedly pointed a crossbow at police officers, leading to an officer-involved shooting.
According to Illinois State Police, the incident occurred around 9:22 a.m. on April 22, 2026, when Decatur Police officers responded to the 400 block of East William Street for reports of an armed individual. Authorities identified the suspect as a 54-year-old Decatur man.
Police said officers located the suspect, who allegedly pointed a crossbow at them during the encounter. In response, Decatur officers discharged their firearms, striking the man. Officers rendered aid at the scene before he was transported to a local hospital with injuries.
According to Illinois State Police, the suspect was later released from the hospital and taken into custody on May 5, 2026, and lodged in the Macon County Jail pending his first court appearance.
Authorities said he faces charges including aggravated assault of a peace officer, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a controlled substance, and armed violence.
Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 5 is conducting an independent investigation into the officer-involved shooting and has submitted findings to the Macon County State’s Attorney’s Office.
Officials said the investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges could be filed.
