Cass County, MI Shooting Today: Suspect Killed After Gunfire Exchange, House Fire

Jefferson Township, MI – A 45-year-old Edwardsburg-area man is dead following a police-involved shooting Wednesday afternoon in Cass County after multiple 911 calls reported an armed intruder and a house fire.

According to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 12:08 p.m. to the 29000 block of Davis Lake Street in Jefferson Township after a male caller reported a man had kicked in a front door and was armed with a handgun. A second caller, a महिला resident, told dispatch her husband was inside the home and also armed.

Authorities said both individuals fled out the back of the residence before deputies arrived. While speaking with callers, officials learned the home had caught fire. The suspect allegedly fled north into a wooded area, prompting deputies to establish a perimeter and request assistance from other agencies.

According to police, the suspect was later spotted near Harris Street and railroad tracks. Michigan State Police troopers attempted to make contact when shots were fired. A second report placed the suspect near Pine Lake Street and Harris Street, where deputies and troopers encountered him in a field.

Officials said an exchange of gunfire occurred, leaving the suspect incapacitated. Officers rendered first aid until emergency crews arrived, but the man later died from his injuries.

The Michigan State Police 6th District Investigative Response Team is reviewing the shooting. Authorities said the suspect’s identity has been confirmed, and family members have been notified.
