Lake County, FL – With hurricane season set to begin June 1, Florida emergency officials are urging residents to prepare now as part of Hurricane Prep Week 2026.
According to Lake County Emergency Management, residents should focus on three key steps: making a plan, building an emergency supply kit, and staying informed about weather conditions.
Emergency officials say preparation is critical, especially as storms can develop quickly and impact large areas across Florida and the Gulf Coast. Creating a household plan includes identifying evacuation routes, emergency contacts, and shelter options.
Building a disaster supply kit is another priority. Recommended items include nonperishable food, water, medications, flashlights, batteries, first aid supplies, and important documents stored in waterproof containers. Officials advise having enough supplies to last at least several days.
Staying informed is equally important, with residents encouraged to monitor weather alerts, sign up for local notifications, and keep a battery-powered radio available in case of power outages.
Experts say early preparation can significantly reduce risks during severe weather, including flooding, high winds, and power disruptions.
Officials also remind residents to consider pets and special medical needs when preparing emergency plans.
