BROOK, IN – A collision between an ambulance and a pickup truck at the intersection of US 41 and SR 16 left three people injured Monday.

The Newton County Sheriff’s Office reported that the accident happened at around 2:16 pm. The ambulance involved in the crash was from Riverside Medical Center and was providing mutual aid to Newton County EMS at the time of the incident. Fortunately, no patients were inside the ambulance during the crash.

According to preliminary investigations, the pickup truck was traveling southbound on US 41, while the ambulance was heading westbound through the intersection with its emergency lights and siren activated. The pickup truck collided with the ambulance on the passenger’s side, causing it to flip over onto the driver’s side before sliding into a ditch and then uprighting itself.

All three adult males in the pickup truck were transported to nearby hospitals with complaints of pain. Medical personnel in the ambulance were unharmed and released after evaluation.

Deputy Scheckel stated, “Thankfully all parties involved were wearing their seatbelts which undoubtedly prevented more serious injuries.”

Sheriff Cothran also confirmed that the US 41 from CR 1000S to CR 700S will have lane restrictions for some time due to ongoing bridge replacements. He urged drivers to reduce their speed and be prepared to stop in this area.

The Newton County 9-1-1 Center, Newton County EMS, Benton County EMS, Southern Jasper EMS, Riverside Medical EMS, Brook Fire Department, Morocco Police Dept., Kentland Police Dept., and the Newton County Prosecutor’s Office assisted at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing, and further details will be released as they become available.
