KANKAKEE, IL – A Kankakee man is now in police custody after allegedly brandishing a firearm during a foot chase with officers in Kankakee Monday.
The suspect, identified as 58-year-old John E. Green, was apprehended and charged with several offenses, including aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and felon in possession of a firearm.
According to City Police, the incident unfolded on Monday evening when officers from the Kankakee Area Metropolitan Enforcement Group, in collaboration with the Kankakee Police Department, were investigating reports of drug sales in the vicinity of East Hickory Street. While pursuing their leads, they encountered a man wearing a hoodie despite the sweltering 80-degree weather.
A foot chase ensued as officers attempted to talk to the individual walking away from the scene, later identified as Green. During the pursuit, Green allegedly produced a handgun from a pocket on his hoodie and pointed it at one of the pursuing officers. In response, the officer promptly drew their own weapon, but fortunately, no shots were fired during the intense standoff.
In addition to the charges, Green also faces charges of resisting arrest and possession of a controlled substance. Authorities later discovered an outstanding warrant for Green’s arrest issued by the Illinois Department of Corrections.
Green currently remains behind bars, and his bond has been set at $75,000.
