Champaign, IL – Central Illinois residents are preparing for a major winter storm expected to bring over 10 inches of snow starting Saturday night. This storm will heavily impact travel conditions along I-70 and surrounding areas, with periods of freezing rain compounding hazards.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from late Saturday through Monday morning. Snow accumulation is expected to exceed a foot in some areas, with wind gusts reaching up to 30 mph. The NWS warns that blowing snow will likely reduce visibility, making travel dangerous or impossible, especially on major highways. Freezing rain could add up to a tenth of an inch of ice, further endangering roads and power lines.

Residents are advised to delay non-essential travel and prepare for possible power outages. Emergency kits, including water, food, flashlights, and blankets, are strongly recommended. Temperatures will remain well below freezing, with highs in the low 20s and wind chills plunging into single digits by Sunday.

Saturday will start calmly with partly sunny skies and highs near 23°F. However, snow is expected to intensify late Saturday night, continuing through Sunday. Heavy snowfall and gusty winds will persist into Monday morning before tapering off.

Looking ahead, temperatures will remain frigid into midweek, with single-digit lows Monday night and a high of 12°F forecast for Tuesday. Motorists and residents should monitor updates and adjust plans accordingly to stay safe during the storm.
