Hendersonville, TN – A Sumner County courtroom fell silent as a judge handed down one of the longest sentences in the county’s history, ensuring a convicted child predator will spend the rest of his life behind bars without any chance of release.

Matthew Cody Ball, 36, was sentenced to 438 years in prison after being found guilty on multiple counts involving the sexual abuse of children spanning more than a decade. The sentence reflects both the severity of the crimes and the lasting harm inflicted on multiple victims across Tennessee and Texas.

According to the Sumner County District Attorney’s Office, a jury convicted Ball in March on charges including continuous sexual abuse of a child, rape of a child, aggravated sexual battery, and statutory rape by an authority figure. Prosecutors said the abuse involved at least four children over a period of roughly 13 years, with additional victims later identified during the investigation.

The case began to unfold in 2024 when Hendersonville Police launched an investigation following complaints from a 10-year-old girl. Authorities said the child reported inappropriate contact, prompting a deeper probe that uncovered a pattern of abuse. During a forensic interview, the victim described repeated assaults beginning when she was just 4 years old.

Investigators later learned that other children had also been victimized. In total, six victims were identified, with incidents occurring across Sumner, Davidson, and Dickson counties, as well as in Texas. Prosecutors presented evidence in court detailing the extent of the abuse and the long-term trauma suffered by the victims.

Judge Jennifer Nichols cited Ball’s extensive criminal behavior, the vulnerability of the victims, and the abuse of trust in delivering the sentence. Under Tennessee law, Ball will serve his sentence without the possibility of parole. He is also required to register as a violent sex offender for life and will remain under supervision if ever released, though the sentence effectively ensures he will die in prison.

District Attorney officials described the outcome as a critical step toward justice for the victims and a warning to others who commit similar crimes. They noted that the sentence is the longest ever imposed in Sumner County for a case of this nature that does not involve life without parole or the death penalty.

The case also highlights the importance of early reporting and intervention. Authorities credited the initial report and subsequent investigation with stopping further abuse and bringing multiple victims forward. Officials are urging anyone who suspects child abuse to contact local law enforcement or the Tennessee Department of Children’s Services immediately.

As April marks Child Abuse Prevention Month, prosecutors emphasized their continued commitment to pursuing the strongest possible penalties against offenders. They say the case underscores both the devastating impact of such crimes and the justice system’s role in holding perpetrators accountable.

The District Attorney’s Office indicated that more updates could follow as related cases and ongoing efforts to support victims continue.
