Michigan – A cold, damp start is already creating slick spots across western Michigan, where temperatures near freezing are allowing light ice to form on untreated roads and bridges.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, freezing rain is possible across areas north of M-20 and east of US-131, including Big Rapids, Clare, and Mount Pleasant. Ice accumulations remain light, up to a tenth of an inch, but even thin glazing can make roads hazardous through the morning hours.
In Grand Rapids, wet pavement may briefly turn slick on elevated surfaces before temperatures rise. Drivers along US-131, I-196, and I-96 should watch for sudden loss of traction on ramps and overpasses. Give extra space and avoid hard braking during early travel.
Conditions shift quickly as the day progresses. Temperatures climb into the upper 60s, changing any lingering ice to steady rain. Winds increase with gusts over 30 mph, and thunderstorms may develop by afternoon into the evening. Some storms could turn strong, with damaging winds the main concern.
Rain continues into Friday before easing, but another round of showers and possible storms returns Saturday. Localized flooding may develop in low-lying areas after repeated rainfall. Keep drains clear and avoid water-covered roads.
The first weekend of April ends cooler, with highs dropping into the 40s by Sunday under mostly cloudy skies. Early next week trends calmer but chilly at night, with temperatures dipping near freezing again.
Conditions are changing fast across western Michigan. Are roads slick where you are right now?
