Highland, IN – Highland police are investigating the death of a 61-year-old man who was found unresponsive inside a vehicle Tuesday morning, while also addressing misinformation circulating on social media about the victim’s identity.
According to the Highland Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 11:16 a.m. Tuesday to the Town of Highland municipal parking lot at the southwest corner of Kennedy Avenue and Highway Avenue after receiving a report of an unresponsive person inside a vehicle.
Police said the caller was an off-duty female law enforcement officer from another jurisdiction who was using the nearby bike trail when she discovered the vehicle.
When officers arrived, they found the 61-year-old man deceased inside the vehicle.
According to the Highland Police Department, the initial investigation does not indicate any foul play.
Police said they do not typically issue public statements on these types of investigations but chose to do so because of misinformation and speculation on social media claiming the deceased was a law enforcement officer. Authorities emphasized that the victim was not a police officer.
The case remains under investigation by the Highland Police Department and the Lake County Coroner’s Office. Officials have not released the man’s identity pending the ongoing investigation.
The Highland Police Department extended its condolences to the man’s family and said it hopes they find peace and comfort during this difficult time.
