Colorado Springs, Colo. – Drivers and crews across El Paso County are dealing with unusual heat Thursday afternoon as temperatures hit 83°F by 1:16 p.m., already breaking a decades-old record and increasing fire danger along busy corridors like I-25.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, the previous record of 81°F set in 1971 has been surpassed, with additional warming possible through late afternoon as strong atmospheric mixing develops ahead of an approaching cold front.

The surge in warmth is being paired with gusty southwest winds that could reach 35 to 40 mph through 6 p.m., especially along exposed roadways and higher terrain west of Colorado Springs. These conditions are elevating wildfire risk across southern Colorado, particularly in dry grassland areas near Fountain, Security-Widefield, and along Highway 24.

Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, secure loose objects, and stay alert for rapidly changing conditions. Sudden wind shifts are expected as the cold front moves through early this evening, bringing a quick temperature drop and calmer overnight conditions.

More advisories could be issued as the front advances, with cooler air settling in by late tonight.
