Newark, New Jersey – Summerlike warmth is set to build across New Jersey, with temperatures climbing into the upper 80s and nearing 90°F during the April 1–7 period as a powerful heat dome expands into the Mid-Atlantic.
According to the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center, a strong high-pressure system is settling over the eastern United States, creating a heat dome that traps hot air near the surface. As air sinks beneath this system, it compresses and warms, pushing temperatures 20 to 30 degrees above normal for early April.
In Newark and surrounding areas, afternoon highs are expected to reach the upper 80s with some locations nearing 90°F, including Trenton, New Brunswick, and Camden. Coastal areas may see slightly lower readings at times, but inland regions will feel the peak of the heat. Overnight lows will remain elevated, limiting cooling relief and increasing early demand for air conditioning.
The heat dome suppresses cloud formation, allowing intense sunlight to heat the ground throughout the day. This limits widespread rainfall, though brief showers may develop along the edges of the system and move through quickly.
The early-season nature of this warmth raises concerns, as many homes and public spaces are not yet prepared for sustained heat. Residents are urged to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, and check on vulnerable individuals.
