Maryland–Washington, D.C. – Sunshine is taking control across the nation’s capital, and the comfortable start to the day won’t last. Pavement, Metro platforms, and city sidewalks will steadily heat up through the afternoon before a much stronger surge of summer heat arrives during the middle of the week.
Washington, D.C. – According to the National Weather Service, today brings mostly sunny skies with a high near 86 degrees and light east winds around 5 to 7 mph. The real story develops over the next two days as temperatures climb to 90 degrees Tuesday before reaching 98 degrees Wednesday, making it the hottest day of the upcoming stretch.
The building heat will affect much of the Washington metropolitan area, including Arlington, Alexandria, Bethesda, Silver Spring, College Park, and nearby Maryland and Northern Virginia communities. Travelers using Interstate 495, Interstate 95, Interstate 395, Interstate 66, the George Washington Parkway, and the Baltimore-Washington Parkway should expect increasing pavement temperatures during afternoon commutes. Metro riders may also notice hotter conditions while waiting on outdoor platforms.
Nationally, forecasters continue monitoring severe thunderstorms capable of heavy rainfall and isolated flash flooding across parts of the Plains, Midwest, and portions of the Southeast. The Washington region, however, remains under a dry weather pattern through Thursday, allowing temperatures to climb well above seasonal averages.
Stay hydrated if spending extended time outdoors. Wear lightweight clothing, take frequent breaks in the shade, and check on older adults and neighbors without reliable air conditioning. Never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles, even for a few minutes.
Relief will be limited through Thursday as highs remain in the middle 90s before scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms return by Friday into the weekend.
