Virginia – Waves are pounding the shoreline, skies remain unsettled, and conditions can change quickly along the Virginia Beach coast today. Beachgoers, drivers, and anyone with outdoor plans should stay alert as heavy rain and hazardous surf create multiple safety concerns.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, a Flood Watch remains in effect until 10 p.m., while a moderate rip current risk continues until 8 p.m. A separate Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect from 8 a.m. through Monday evening, with breaking waves of 4 to 5 feet expected to create dangerous swimming conditions.
Scattered to widespread showers and thunderstorms will continue to develop through the day. Forecasters warn that localized rainfall totals of 3 to 5 inches are possible where storms repeatedly move across the same area. Those heavier pockets could produce flash flooding on low-lying roads, intersections, and poor-drainage areas across Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, and nearby Hampton Roads communities.
Drivers along Interstate 264, Interstate 64, U.S. 58, Shore Drive, Atlantic Avenue, and Pacific Avenue should watch for standing water during heavier downpours. Never drive through flooded roadways. Water depth can be difficult to judge, and conditions may worsen rapidly.
Along the oceanfront, officials urge everyone to remain out of the surf. Even experienced swimmers can be swept away by powerful rip currents. Minor coastal flooding remains possible in the most vulnerable shoreline locations, although widespread tidal flooding is not anticipated.
Once this system exits, weather conditions improve significantly. Sunshine returns by midweek with highs climbing to around 91 degrees Wednesday and Thursday, bringing a much hotter and drier stretch across southeast Virginia.
