Champaign, IL – A 21-year-old man has been charged in connection with a fatal shooting earlier this month in Champaign, as police continue to seek help from the public.
According to the Champaign Police Department, officers responded around 5:22 p.m. on Friday, May 1, 2026, to the 500 block of East Columbia Avenue following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located the victim, identified as Aaron Sibley, in a nearby alley with a life-threatening gunshot wound.
Emergency crews provided immediate medical aid before transporting Sibley to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
During the initial response, police detained 21-year-old Charles Haynes. Following further investigation by detectives and crime scene personnel, the Champaign County State’s Attorney’s Office charged Haynes with four counts of first-degree murder.
Authorities say the investigation remains active, with officers continuing to pursue leads to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
Police are urging anyone with information or surveillance footage from the area to come forward. Tips can be shared directly with the Champaign Police Department or submitted anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
Officials note that cash rewards may be available for information leading to an arrest in homicide cases.
