Paducah, KY – Gusty southwest winds and dry air are creating a heightened risk for fast-spreading fires across western Kentucky this afternoon, especially during peak heating hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, winds will range from 8 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph, while relative humidity drops between 20% and 35%. These conditions make it easier for fires to ignite and spread quickly, particularly in dry grass and open fields.
Communities including Paducah, Mayfield, Murray, and Hopkinsville will experience warm temperatures climbing into the low 80s today, with even hotter conditions expected through the weekend. Several locations across the region, including Evansville and Cape Girardeau, may approach or break record highs by Sunday, with temperatures nearing 85 degrees.
Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning, properly dispose of cigarettes, and avoid parking vehicles on dry grass. Sparks from equipment or vehicles could quickly lead to uncontrolled fires under these conditions.
A cold front arrives Sunday night, bringing a slight 15% to 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms, followed by cooler temperatures early next week. Fire danger remains elevated until then, and additional advisories may be issued.
