Chicago, Illinois – Snow-covered roads are creating a slow and slick start across northern Illinois this morning, but a rapid warm-up will take hold within hours and continue into the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, early snow is tapering off by mid-morning Wednesday, with temperatures rising from the 30s into the upper 40s by late afternoon. Major routes including I-90, I-94, and I-290 saw reduced speeds during the morning commute, though conditions improve steadily as melting begins.
The bigger shift comes late week. Highs reach the upper 50s to low 60s Thursday, then climb into the 60–70°F range by Friday and Saturday across inland areas. Near Lake Michigan, cooler air will hold lakeshore communities like Evanston and downtown Chicago several degrees lower, especially during the afternoon due to onshore winds.
Dry conditions dominate through Friday, allowing snowmelt to accelerate and reducing travel concerns. However, fluctuating temperatures early each morning could still create isolated slick spots on bridges and untreated roads.
Residents should prepare for rapidly changing conditions, from winter-like travel this morning to spring warmth by the weekend updates may be issued if lake breeze impacts or temperature swings create localized hazards.
