Watertown, NY – Drivers across northern New York face rapidly deteriorating road conditions this afternoon as intense lake effect snow bands shift south, cutting visibility to near zero and covering highways in minutes.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a Lake Effect Snow Warning remains in effect for Jefferson and Lewis counties until 8 p.m. Tuesday, with an additional 2 to 5 inches expected and wind gusts reaching 40 mph. In Oswego and northern Cayuga counties, heavier bands will persist longer, dropping 6 to 10 inches through 8 a.m. Wednesday.

The Tug Hill Plateau will take the hardest hit, where snowfall rates and blowing snow could shut down stretches of I-81 and secondary roads. Conditions in Watertown and Fort Drum are expected to gradually improve late this afternoon as the band drifts south, but travel remains hazardous through the evening commute.

Farther south into Oswego County, including areas near Fair Haven and Oswego, snowfall intensifies tonight. Roads may become impassable at times, especially on untreated surfaces and rural routes.

Officials urge drivers to avoid unnecessary travel, keep headlights on, and prepare for sudden whiteout conditions. Snow bands will remain narrow but intense, meaning conditions can change within minutes.

Warnings remain in effect through tonight, with additional advisories possible if bands stall into Wednesday morning.
