Iowa – Warm air is surging across central Iowa, but the atmosphere is quickly turning volatile as storms prepare to fire later today.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, central Iowa sits under an Enhanced Risk (Level 3 of 5) for severe thunderstorms. Storms are expected to develop by mid to late afternoon, bringing damaging winds, large hail, and a possible tornado threat. Rain chances climb to 60%, with gusts already reaching 30 to 34 mph ahead of the system .

Des Moines will see temperatures rise near 81°F before clouds thicken and storms develop. Showers and thunderstorms are likely between mid-afternoon and early evening, with brief heavy downpours reducing visibility on I-35, I-80, and I-235. Rainfall totals may exceed a quarter inch in stronger cells, leading to ponding on roads and minor flooding in low-lying areas.

Winds remain a key concern. Gusts over 30 mph outside storms could make driving difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles. Secure outdoor items now and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions.

Storms begin to taper later tonight, followed by a sharp drop in temperatures into the mid-30s. That cooler air lingers into Saturday, with highs only in the 50s under breezy conditions.

Sunday brings calmer weather and sunshine, with temperatures rebounding near 60°F. A steady warm-up follows into early next week, with highs climbing back toward 80°F by Tuesday.
