Missouri – Darkening skies and thick humidity are building across Kansas City right now, and storms could rapidly intensify by mid to late afternoon, bringing heavy rain and dangerous travel conditions. Roads may go from dry to water-covered in minutes as this system develops.
According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City/Pleasant Hill, a Flood Watch is in effect through late tonight, with storms capable of producing heavy rainfall in a short time. Some areas could see over an inch of rain quickly, increasing the risk of flash flooding, especially along and south of U.S. Highway 50.
Kansas City metro areas, including Independence, Overland Park, and Lee’s Summit, will see storms develop after mid-afternoon. These storms may also bring large hail, damaging winds, and isolated tornado potential as instability increases.
Travel along I-70, I-435, and I-35 could become hazardous during the evening commute. Expect reduced visibility, ponding water, and sudden slowdowns. Avoid low-water crossings and areas prone to flooding.
Conditions may deteriorate quickly into the evening as storms train over the same areas. That raises the risk of localized flash flooding, especially in urban and low-lying zones.
Saturday brings a quick shift, with cooler air and highs near the upper 50s under clearing skies. Sunshine returns Sunday with highs near 70°F, followed by a steady warm-up into next week.
Stay weather-aware and keep alerts enabled as storms develop. Are you seeing clouds build or rain starting in your area yet?
