Davenport, Iowa – Drivers along Interstate 80 and Interstate 74 should prepare for two waves of thunderstorms on Friday, with the second round posing a stronger severe weather threat through Friday night.

According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, conditions will remain relatively quiet through Thursday aside from isolated showers. Temperatures will continue running well above normal, climbing into the 60s and even mid-70s in parts of eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois by Friday afternoon. That warmth will help fuel storm development.

The first round of storms is expected early Friday, potentially affecting the morning commute from Cedar Rapids through Davenport and Moline. While some storms could produce brief heavy rain and lightning, the greater concern arrives later in the day.

A second, more organized round of thunderstorms is likely Friday afternoon into Friday night. Damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph and large hail are possible, especially along and south of I-80. Cities including Iowa City, the Quad Cities and Galesburg could see rapidly changing conditions during the evening commute.

Motorists on I-80, I-74 and I-380 should monitor weather alerts and be ready for sudden downpours and gusty winds. Secure outdoor items ahead of Friday afternoon and ensure mobile alerts are enabled.

Storms may linger into late Friday night before pushing east, and additional watches or warnings could be issued as the system strengthens.
