Marion, Indiana – Grant County officials are warning residents about aggressive scam calls falsely claiming loved ones have been injured and need immediate money.

According to the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, multiple reports were received Tuesday from residents who said callers targeted employees’ spouses, alleging their family member had been hurt and urgently required payment.

Authorities emphasized that law enforcement will never ask for money over the phone or demand payment through gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency or payment apps.

“These callers are using fear and urgency to manipulate victims,” the sheriff’s office said in a public alert. Officials advised residents to hang up immediately, avoid providing personal information and not send money under any circumstances.

Based on previous investigations and similar patterns, authorities believe many of the scam calls may be originating from individuals incarcerated in Georgia who are allegedly using contraband cell phones to conduct organized operations targeting citizens in Grant County and beyond.

Officials recommend residents who receive such calls hang up, avoid engaging with the caller, refrain from calling the number back and report the incident to local law enforcement.

The alert is especially relevant to working families and commuters who may receive unexpected calls during business hours.

Anyone with information or who believes they have been targeted is encouraged to contact the Grant County Sheriff’s Office.
