Brevig Mission, Alaska – Wind gusts up to 45 mph are driving blowing snow across Teller Road early Monday, cutting visibility below one-half mile at times and creating dangerous travel conditions through the afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Fairbanks, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Brevig Mission until 4 p.m. Monday. North-northeast winds will continue gusting as high as 45 mph, producing widespread blowing snow and sharply reduced visibility. At times, drivers may see visibility fall under one-half mile, especially in open and exposed areas.

Wind chills will plunge as low as 35 degrees below zero. At those levels, frostbite can develop on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes. The combination of strong winds and extreme cold will make travel along Teller Road and local access routes hazardous, particularly for snowmachines and high-profile vehicles.

Blowing snow may drift across roadways, covering previously cleared sections and making it difficult to distinguish road edges. Brief whiteout conditions are possible in stronger gusts. Residents traveling between Brevig Mission and nearby communities should consider delaying non-essential trips until winds subside.

Anyone venturing outdoors should wear multiple insulated layers, cover exposed skin and carry emergency supplies, including extra blankets and a charged phone. Check on elders and ensure heating systems are functioning properly.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve late Monday afternoon as winds ease, but reduced visibility and dangerous wind chills will persist until at least 4 p.m. Additional advisories could be issued if gusts remain stronger than expected.
