Charleston, W.Va. – A passing cold front will bring scattered rain showers Sunday morning, followed by dry conditions this afternoon before another system raises the threat of wintry weather for the Monday morning commute across southern West Virginia.

Light rain will taper off by midday Sunday across areas including Huntington, Charleston, and Parkersburg, with improving conditions expected through the afternoon and evening. High temperatures will climb into the 40s and low 50s, helping roadways dry before nightfall.

Attention then turns to early Monday, when a new round of precipitation is expected to move into the region before sunrise. If moisture arrives while surface temperatures remain near freezing, a brief period of snow or a rain-snow mix could develop, especially along and north of the I-64 corridor.

In Charleston and Huntington, I-64 could see slick stretches between 5 a.m. and 8 a.m. Monday if colder air lingers. Farther south and at higher elevations near Beckley along I-77, temperatures closer to freezing may support light snow accumulation on bridges and untreated roads. Elkins and portions of the higher terrain along US-33 could also experience brief wintry impacts.

As temperatures rise later Monday morning, precipitation is expected to transition to plain rain, reducing the risk of prolonged travel disruptions. However, even light wintry precipitation during peak commute hours can create hazardous conditions.

Drivers are encouraged to monitor forecast updates, allow extra travel time, and remain alert for changing road conditions early Monday. Additional advisories could be issued if confidence increases in accumulating snow or ice.
