Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Light to moderate snowfall will continue moving east across the region through Saturday afternoon, bringing widespread totals of 1 to 3 inches and creating slick travel along I-29 and I-90.
The steadiest snow is expected during the morning hours before gradually tapering off early to mid-afternoon. Areas across southeastern South Dakota, including Sioux Falls, Mitchell, and Yankton, will generally see 1 to 3 inches of accumulation. Farther northeast into southwestern Minnesota, including Worthington and Marshall, localized totals could approach 4 inches.
Road conditions are expected to deteriorate at times, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and untreated secondary roads. Motorists traveling along I-29 from Sioux Falls toward Brookings and along I-90 east of Mitchell should prepare for reduced visibility and snow-covered lanes during periods of steadier snowfall.
Although snowfall rates are not expected to be extreme, even light to moderate bursts may quickly coat road surfaces, leading to slippery conditions. Winter weather advisories remain in effect for portions of the area through the afternoon as impacts continue.
Snow will gradually diminish from west to east later today, with improving travel conditions expected by evening. However, lingering slick spots may persist after sunset as temperatures remain cold enough to refreeze moisture on roadways.
Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra time to reach destinations. Checking updated road conditions before departing is strongly recommended, especially for those traveling across state lines between South Dakota and Minnesota.
