Abilene, Texas – Near 90-degree heat could challenge records and increase fire danger along I-20 and US-83 by late Saturday afternoon as temperatures surge 20 to 25 degrees above normal across West Central Texas.

According to the National Weather Service in Abilene/San Angelo, highs will climb well into the 80s this weekend, with Abilene forecast to reach 89 degrees Saturday and the mid-80s again Sunday. The probability of tying or breaking a daily record Saturday stands between 50 and 75 percent, an unusually high mark for late February.

Communities from Sweetwater to Cisco and Eastland will feel the early taste of summer. South winds and dry air will add to the warmth, increasing evaporation and drying grasses along roadways such as Loop 322 and US-277. The combination of heat and cured vegetation may elevate wildfire concerns during peak afternoon hours.

While Sunday remains very warm, slight cooling is expected compared to Saturday’s peak. Drivers along I-20 should remain mindful of heat-related vehicle stress, especially during extended travel in the afternoon.

Relief may begin to take shape by the middle of next week as a pattern shift brings a better chance for showers and thunderstorms across West Central Texas. It remains too early to pinpoint rainfall totals, but the potential for measurable precipitation could provide needed moisture.

Residents are urged to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor burning and monitor updates as record heat and changing weather patterns unfold through the weekend.
