Richmond, Virginia – Wet roads could turn slushy before sunrise Monday, March 2, as colder air filters into central and eastern Virginia, raising the risk for accumulating snow along I-95 and I-64 during the early commute. Drivers should closely monitor updates now as pavement temperatures may fall quickly overnight.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, rain is likely Thursday with totals ranging from around a quarter inch north to more than 1 inch south. Milder air settles in this weekend, with highs climbing into the 60s inland Saturday. A backdoor cold front drops south Sunday, ushering in colder air from northeast to southwest and setting the stage for potential winter weather late Sunday night into Monday.

While exact amounts remain uncertain, early projections suggest 1 to 2 inches of snow could accumulate across parts of central and southeastern Virginia if colder air arrives in time. In Richmond and Petersburg, a rain-to-snow transition could occur along I-95 and I-85 before daybreak Monday. Across Hampton Roads, including Norfolk and Virginia Beach, snow or a rain-snow mix may develop near I-264 and US-58, especially on bridges and elevated roadways.

Even light accumulations can create hazardous travel if temperatures hover near freezing. Motorists should prepare for reduced visibility, slick overpasses and possible school or travel delays Monday morning.

Confidence in specific totals and precipitation type will improve over the next 48 hours. Additional advisories or winter weather headlines may be issued as Monday, March 2 approaches.
