Tallahassee, Fla. – Sweltering heat will grip North Florida and much of Georgia today, sending the heat index to a dangerous 108 degrees in some areas. The National Weather Service has issued heat advisories from the Florida Panhandle, including Tallahassee, up through Macon, Vidalia, and central Georgia until 8 p.m. EDT Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service, the advisory covers the Big Bend and Panhandle of Florida as well as a broad stretch of south and central Georgia. Key cities like Tallahassee, Panama City, Valdosta, Macon, and Vidalia will see “feels-like” temperatures over 105°, with peak danger between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Residents in Leon, Gadsden, Bay, Walton, and surrounding Florida counties, plus Georgia’s Bibb, Houston, Laurens, and Toombs counties, are urged to limit outdoor activity, check on vulnerable neighbors, and avoid strenuous work during the hottest hours. Emergency officials stress staying in air-conditioned places, drinking plenty of fluids, and knowing the signs of heat exhaustion. OSHA recommends frequent breaks for anyone working outside, and anyone showing symptoms of heat stroke should be moved to a cool area immediately—call 911 if needed.

This dangerous heat follows a string of early July temperature spikes across the Southeast. More advisories could follow if the heat persists into the workweek.

Heat advisories remain in effect for all named counties through 8 p.m. tonight. Monitor updates from local officials for further warnings.
