New York, NY – Thunderstorms packing heavy rain are set to sweep through Manhattan Monday night, with the potential to flood streets and trigger power outages just as the work week begins. Drivers on FDR Drive and city streets could face slick conditions and sudden downpours after 8 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service, storms will begin to move through the city Monday afternoon, with the heaviest rain and lightning expected Monday night. Rainfall amounts could reach up to a quarter inch in some neighborhoods, with isolated higher totals possible. Flash flooding may develop quickly—especially in low-lying areas—so city officials urge residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm hours.

The thunderstorm threat will linger into Tuesday, with a 40% chance of additional showers. Temperatures will climb to a humid 84°F by Tuesday afternoon, creating muggy conditions across Central Park, the Bronx, and Queens. By midweek, the risk of showers continues, especially Wednesday afternoon, though the sun will peek through at times.

If you live in flood-prone neighborhoods or plan to commute Monday night, secure outdoor items, charge devices, and review your emergency plans. New York City Emergency Management recommends keeping flashlights handy and signing up for local alerts.

While storms mark the start of the week, skies will clear by Thursday, bringing partly sunny days and highs in the upper 80s through Friday. More scattered showers are possible by Saturday, so keep rain gear close at hand.

Warnings remain in effect for Monday night. Stay tuned to local updates for the latest advisories.
