Savannah, Ga. – Strong storms could sweep across southeast Georgia Sunday afternoon, with damaging wind gusts and large hail possible as a severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect until 5 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch (#390) was issued at 11:25 a.m. EDT, covering Bryan, Bulloch, Chatham, Effingham, and Screven counties. Residents in Savannah, Pooler, Statesboro, and surrounding areas should remain alert for rapidly developing thunderstorms capable of producing 60 mph winds and quarter-sized hail.

The watch includes key travel corridors like I-95 and I-16, increasing risks for drivers, especially during early afternoon hours when storms are expected to strengthen. Downed limbs and brief power outages are possible. Local emergency management recommends securing outdoor items and staying indoors during lightning activity.

This early June system comes amid rising summer humidity and heat, creating unstable conditions across the Coastal Plain. While tornadoes are not the primary threat, isolated rotation cannot be ruled out.

Thunderstorm activity may persist into early evening before tapering off. More updates are expected if the threat intensifies or warnings are issued.
