Wilmington, N.C. – A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for parts of southeastern North Carolina until 5 p.m. Sunday, with damaging winds and large hail threatening communities from Bladen County to the coast.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, Watch 390 was issued at 11:25 a.m. and covers six counties, including Brunswick, Columbus, New Hanover, Pender, and Robeson. Forecasters warn of storms capable of producing wind gusts up to 60 mph and quarter-sized hail.
Drivers along U.S. 74, I-40, and coastal roads should prepare for sudden downpours and dangerous lightning. In Wilmington and Leland, afternoon plans could be disrupted as cells track eastward. Emergency managers urge residents to secure loose outdoor items and remain indoors during thunder activity.
This system brings a risk of isolated flash flooding in low-lying areas, especially where heavy rain persists over already saturated ground. The timing of peak activity is expected between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., though conditions may vary by location.
Additional advisories may be issued as storms intensify. Residents should monitor NOAA Weather Radio or local alerts for real-time updates.
