Tampa, Florida – Storms are set to intensify across Florida Thursday afternoon, bringing a high chance of lightning, heavy rain, and hazardous travel near Tampa.

According to the National Weather Service, thunderstorms will begin developing after 11 a.m. Thursday, with the strongest activity expected between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. The chance of rain is 80%, and areas around Tampa—including along I-275 and major surface roads—could see over half an inch of rainfall. Winds will blow from the southwest at up to 10 mph, creating slick driving conditions.

Thursday marks the second consecutive day of elevated storm risk in the Tampa Bay region. Scattered showers will linger into Thursday night, with continued road hazards during the evening hours. Those traveling should allow extra time and avoid flooded roadways.

Friday brings even more unsettled conditions, with a 70% chance of showers and thunderstorms and a high near 91°F. Light winds and saturated ground may lead to flash flooding in low-lying areas. The stormy pattern continues through the weekend, with isolated storms Friday night and widespread rain likely again Saturday.

Residents should remain weather-aware through Sunday as heat builds and rain chances persist. Temperatures will climb into the low 90s by Monday, with storm activity tapering slightly.

Five-Day Tampa Bay Forecast (June 4–9):

  • Wednesday Night: Thunderstorms likely. Low 74°F. Rain chance 70%.
  • Thursday: Showers and storms after 11 a.m. High 89°F. Rain chance 80%.
