Monterey, VA — Sub-freezing temperatures will settle across parts of western Virginia and eastern West Virginia overnight, with readings dropping to around 32°F between 12 a.m. and 8 a.m. Friday, threatening crops, outdoor plumbing and early-morning travel in Monterey, Petersburg and Franklin.
According to the National Weather Service, the freeze will impact Western Highland County in Virginia and Western Grant and Pendleton counties in West Virginia, with the coldest window from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. Friday. Calm winds and clear skies will allow heat to escape quickly, creating ideal conditions for frost formation in valleys and low-lying rural areas.
Sensitive vegetation may be killed within hours as frost develops, especially in agricultural zones near Monterey and Petersburg. Unprotected pipes and outdoor plumbing face a risk of freezing, particularly in elevated and exposed areas. Patchy frost could also form on bridges and untreated stretches of US-220, WV-28 and US-33, creating slick spots for early commuters.
Low-lying fields and drainage areas near Franklin are especially vulnerable, where colder air settles first and frost can form rapidly before sunrise.
Residents should cover or bring in plants and insulate exposed pipes tonight. Avoid early travel on untreated rural roads where frost may develop.
The most critical impacts will occur between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m., when temperatures reach their lowest and frost forms rapidly across exposed surfaces.
