Milwaukee, WI – As Halloween approaches, Milwaukee residents are warned of an unusual threat lurking in their yards—“zombie trees.” These seemingly normal trees are actually dead or dying on the inside, turning them into potentially dangerous hazards.
Zombie trees may look alive but are structurally compromised. Unexpectedly, weakened branches or even the entire tree could fall, posing serious injury risks and potential property damage. Experts suggest that internal decay or insect infestation typically causes these trees to die from the inside out. Warning signs include branch die-off, early leaf drop, discoloration, and, in some cases, visible fungi or increased woodpecker activity.
While these trees provide wildlife habitats in forests, they become hazards in urban areas. Arborists recommend homeowners assess suspicious trees for safety. If you suspect a zombie tree, contact a certified arborist for an inspection. Treatments might involve pruning, fertilization, or, if needed, full removal. The USDA Forest Service’s “Tree Owner’s Manual” offers additional tips on tree care and safe planting practices.
Stay vigilant this Halloween—zombie trees could be closer than you think.
