Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – Temperatures will fall below freezing overnight, bringing a widespread cold snap early Monday that could damage plants, impact plumbing, and create slick travel conditions across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, a Freeze Warning is in effect from 2 a.m. to 10 a.m. Monday, with temperatures dropping below 32 degrees across much of western Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio, and northern West Virginia. Lows are expected to reach 27 degrees in areas like Franklin and Clarion, around 29 degrees in Pittsburgh and Morgantown, and near 31 degrees in Zanesville.
Cities including Pittsburgh, Wheeling, New Philadelphia, and Uniontown will see several hours of sub-freezing temperatures before sunrise. Major corridors such as I-70, I-79, I-76, and I-77 may develop patchy frost on bridges and overpasses between 4 a.m. and 9 a.m., increasing the risk of slick travel during the morning commute.
The freeze poses a threat to early-season crops, gardens, and exposed outdoor plumbing. Residents should cover sensitive plants, bring potted vegetation indoors, and insulate or disconnect outdoor hoses. Extra caution is advised for drivers on elevated roadways where surfaces cool fastest.
Temperatures will briefly recover Monday afternoon before another colder night sets up, with additional sub-freezing lows possible by early Tuesday. Further alerts may be issued as conditions evolve.
