Raleigh, North Carolina – Wind gusts are increasing quickly across central North Carolina this morning, with peak impacts expected by late morning that could affect travel and outdoor activities through early afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, a cold front moving through the region will bring gusts between 28 and 35 mph through midday Sunday. The strongest winds are expected between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., especially along major corridors including I-40, I-85, and US-1 through Raleigh, Durham, and Greensboro.
Cities across the Triangle and Sandhills will see noticeable changes behind the front. Raleigh and Durham are expected to reach highs near 71 degrees, while Fayetteville and Goldsboro climb to around 74 degrees. Winds will gradually ease later this afternoon, but not before creating difficult driving conditions for high-profile vehicles and minor debris concerns.
A brief round of light rain may follow the front, with totals staying under 0.10 inches. While rainfall will be limited, wet roads combined with gusty winds could create slick spots during the late morning hours.
Residents should secure loose outdoor items, use caution on elevated roadways, and allow extra travel time during peak wind hours. Conditions improve after 2 p.m. as winds weaken, with calmer weather expected heading into the evening.
