Cheyenne, WY — A significant winter storm is set to bring heavy snow and hazardous winds to Wyoming’s Sierra Madre and Snowy Ranges through Sunday morning. Forecasters predict snowfall of 12 to 24 inches in higher elevations, with gusts reaching 60 mph.

According to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, the warning began at 11 a.m. Saturday and extends until 11 a.m. Sunday. Blowing snow will reduce visibility and could disorient hikers and snowmobilers. Travelers should use caution and prepare for delays on local roads, including Highway 130 and nearby mountain passes. Frostbite and hypothermia are additional risks in these conditions.

For Sunday, the region will experience sunny skies, but strong winds will persist, with gusts of up to 55 mph in some areas. Monday could bring a slight chance of snow showers, with blustery conditions and lows dipping to 16°F. The New Year’s forecast shows clearer skies, but temperatures will remain chilly, peaking at 33°F.

Residents and visitors are urged to monitor weather updates and avoid unnecessary travel during the storm. Snow chains or winter tires are recommended for drivers navigating mountain routes. For the latest updates, visit weather.gov/cys.
