La Crosse, Wisconsin — A warming trend will bring increasing rain chances to western Wisconsin, with light showers Sunday morning followed by a higher-impact round of storms Monday afternoon that could slow travel and create brief hazardous conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, light rain may develop between 6 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sunday, with limited impact but enough to create slick roads across La Crosse, Eau Claire, Winona and Sparta. The more significant window arrives Monday from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., when storm chances increase to around 50 percent as temperatures climb into the mid-70s.

During the Monday peak window, heavier downpours may produce quick water pooling on I-90, U.S. 53 and Highway 16, especially in low-lying urban streets and underpasses in La Crosse and nearby river communities. Brief gusty winds could also knock small debris into roadways, creating sudden hazards for drivers during the late-day commute.

This is part of a broader system moving across the Upper Midwest, bringing a short warm-up ahead of a cold front that will trigger scattered storms before cooler air returns Tuesday.

Residents should plan for changing conditions, slow down on wet roads Sunday morning and avoid driving through water-covered areas during heavier rain Monday.

The greatest disruption is expected between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. Monday, when storms may produce the most significant travel slowdowns and brief hazardous conditions.
