Madison, WI — Wisconsin’s 2024 bear hunting season begins statewide today, providing residents with an opportunity to engage in a popular outdoor tradition. Thousands of hunters, many who have waited years to draw a permit, are expected to participate across various management zones.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), hunters will navigate six designated zones, with hunting methods regulated by zone and date. Bear populations in the state remain strong, and Wisconsin is home to an estimated 25,000 bears. However, competition for permits is fierce, with more applicants than available tags each year.

Last year’s harvest saw only 2,922 bears taken, well below the average. Hunters should prepare for another challenging season as abundant acorns may again reduce bait effectiveness, affecting success rates statewide. The DNR advises all hunters to review their zone-specific regulations.
