Elkhorn, WI – Authorities in Walworth County are urging residents to be cautious after a new wave of fraudulent messages falsely claiming to be from the Wisconsin Department of Motor Vehicles resurfaced this week.
According to the Village of East Troy Police Department, scammers are sending out emails and text messages warning of a “final notice” or an “unpaid traffic violation” in an attempt to trick recipients into clicking a link and paying a fake fine. Officials emphasize that the Wisconsin DMV does not contact individuals via text or email to demand payment or threaten penalties.
The message, which often includes a bogus violation notice and payment instructions, is a phishing attempt designed to steal personal and financial information. Law enforcement warns that clicking the link or entering any details could compromise sensitive data.
Authorities advise the public to take the following steps if such a message is received:
- ❌ Do not click any links or respond with personal information.
- ✅ Immediately delete the message.
- ✅ Report the scam to local law enforcement or the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

Officials continue to monitor the situation and encourage residents to remain vigilant.
