Marquette, MI – A thick blanket of fog over Lake Superior is reducing visibility and prompting the National Weather Service to issue multiple dense fog advisories for Michigan waters, effective through Tuesday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, visibility is expected to drop below one nautical mile across vast sections of Lake Superior, from Saxon Harbor, Wisconsin, to Whitefish Point, Michigan. The advisory began Monday and will remain in effect until 8 a.m. EDT Tuesday.

The fog is impacting areas both nearshore and offshore, including popular maritime routes such as the Upper Entrance of the Portage Canal to Manitou Island, Isle Royale National Park, and the waters between Grand Marais and Marquette. An additional advisory for waters west of Saxon Harbor is expected to expire at 8 p.m. EDT Monday.

Mariners are advised to exercise extreme caution if travel is necessary. Authorities recommend using radar and compass navigation, keeping all running lights on, and sounding proper fog signals when visibility is compromised.

The widespread fog presents a hazard for recreational and commercial boaters, potentially disrupting local traffic and fishing activities across Lake Superior’s central and eastern sectors.

Dense fog advisories for Minnesota coastal waters including Grand Marais and Taconite Harbor also remain active until 7 p.m. CDT.

Conditions are expected to improve after daybreak Tuesday as weather patterns shift. However, boaters are encouraged to monitor updates from the National Weather Service and delay travel when possible until visibility improves.
