Des Moines, IA – Ice storms continue to hammer central Iowa, creating treacherous driving conditions as freezing rain coats roads. Officials are urging residents to stay off highways and local roads through noon on Saturday as ice accumulations create slick and hazardous surfaces.

According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for much of central and northern Iowa until 12 p.m. Saturday. Freezing rain overnight has created up to a quarter-inch of ice on untreated roads, particularly along Interstate 80 and U.S. Highway 69. Travel is not advised in many areas, with Iowa DOT maps showing widespread coverage of “partially covered” to “impassable” routes.

Drivers who must travel are encouraged to reduce speeds, allow extra distance between vehicles, and remain prepared for sudden slick spots, especially on bridges and overpasses. The weather service also warns of patchy fog reducing visibility to three miles or less in parts of the state.

Saturday’s forecast predicts freezing rain tapering off by mid-morning, followed by patchy fog and highs around 36°F. However, lingering ice may still pose risks as temperatures hover near freezing through the afternoon.

Looking ahead, Sunday will bring a brief reprieve with mostly cloudy skies and highs in the low 40s. Monday is expected to be sunny and warmer, with highs reaching 43°F. However, forecasters caution that another cold front could arrive midweek, potentially bringing light snow.

Residents should monitor the Iowa DOT 511 app for updated road conditions and exercise caution when stepping outdoors, as ice on sidewalks and driveways poses fall risks. Officials recommend waiting out the storm whenever possible to stay safe.
