Reno, NV – A powerful winter storm is set to impact Northern California and western Nevada, bringing heavy snowfall and dangerous winds to the region. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory through Friday evening and a Winter Storm Watch from Sunday afternoon through Monday evening for Lassen, Eastern Plumas, Eastern Sierra counties, and the Greater Lake Tahoe area.
According to the National Weather Service, the Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 11 p.m. Friday, with up to 3 inches of additional snowfall in lower elevations and up to 7 inches at the Sierra crest. Ridge winds could reach 70 mph, while gusts around Lake Tahoe may reach 40 mph, generating waves of 2 to 3 feet.
The Winter Storm Watch, beginning Sunday afternoon and lasting through Monday evening, predicts between 1 and 2 feet of snow along the Sierra crest and 6 to 12 inches below 7,000 feet. Ridge winds could intensify to 80 mph, raising concerns about widespread power outages and hazardous travel conditions.
Authorities warn that travel could be treacherous, especially during the Monday morning commute. Drivers are advised to exercise caution, check road conditions by calling 511, and prepare for delays or potential closures of mountain passes. Residents should secure loose outdoor items and prepare for possible power outages due to falling trees and downed power lines.
Officials urge the public to monitor weather updates and take necessary precautions as the storm approaches.
