Albuquerque, NM – A powerful winter storm is set to impact northern New Mexico, bringing heavy snowfall, strong winds, and dangerous travel conditions. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the Northern and Southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains and the Tusas Mountains, including Chama, effective from 9 p.m. Thursday until 6 p.m. Friday.
According to the National Weather Service, the storm is expected to bring 5 to 10 inches of snow, with localized amounts reaching 15 inches on west-facing slopes. Winds from the west and southwest could gust up to 65 mph, creating whiteout conditions and reducing visibility below 1/4 mile at times.
Travel in the affected areas could be very difficult to impossible, with strong crosswinds further complicating road conditions. Additionally, power outages are possible due to heavy snow and strong winds damaging trees and power lines.
Residents are urged to prepare for the storm by securing outdoor objects, stocking up on emergency supplies, and avoiding unnecessary travel. If travel is necessary, officials recommend keeping an extra flashlight, food, and water in vehicles in case of emergency.
