Indiana Death Chase: LaPorte County Suspect Crashes, Dies While Evading Arrest

La Porte County, IN – A 44-year-old wanted man died in a crash Tuesday while attempting to flee from law enforcement in La Porte County.

According to the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office, deputies attempted a traffic stop on Robert F. Bartels around 4:04 p.m. after spotting his silver pickup truck on CR 500 West. Bartels fled westbound on CR 250 North, prompting a pursuit.

In the 6300 west block of CR 250 North, Bartels’ truck left the road and crashed into a tree. He was extricated from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities say Bartels was wanted for leaving the scene of an accident, a Class B misdemeanor. The crash remains under investigation, with toxicology results pending.
