Winnipeg, MB – A downtown Winnipeg robbery Tuesday evening ended with two suspects in custody just hours later, after a 19-year-old victim was assaulted and had his cellphone stolen near Furby Street.

According to the Winnipeg Police Service, the incident happened on Tuesday evening around 6:00 p.m. in the 0–99 block of Furby Street, between Cornish Avenue and Wolseley Avenue. Police say the victim was walking in the area when he was approached by two suspects who asked him for a cigarette.

Investigators say the encounter escalated when the victim was allegedly thrown to the ground, assaulted, and robbed of his cellphone. The victim sustained minor injuries as a result of the attack.

Central District General Patrol officers responded to the scene and took over the investigation. According to police, a canvass of CCTV footage in the surrounding area provided officers with a detailed description of the suspects, which helped narrow down their location.

At approximately 7:28 p.m., officers arrested a 23-year-old woman and a 25-year-old man at a residence in the 0–99 block of Furby Street, police said. The victim’s stolen property was also recovered during the arrest.

Both suspects now face charges of robbery, according to police. They were later released on Undertakings, meaning they are expected to appear in court at a later date under specific conditions.

Police did not release the names of the accused. The investigation is considered ongoing.

Residents in the downtown and Wolseley areas are reminded to remain aware of their surroundings and report suspicious activity to police.
