Winnipeg, Manitoba – A 2-year-old child was located safe hours after an Amber Alert prompted a provincewide emergency response Friday.

According to the Winnipeg Police Service, the Amber Alert was issued at approximately 12:59 p.m. on February 27, 2026, after officers responded to a reported child abduction in the 0–100 block of Chesterfield Avenue earlier that morning.

Police said a dispute allegedly occurred around 10:09 a.m. between the child’s biological mother and two female suspects. During the incident, the mother was allegedly assaulted with a weapon, and the child was taken from the residence.

Authorities said the suspects traveled by taxi to the area of McPhillips Street and Logan Avenue, where they exited the vehicle. After seeing the Amber Alert, a concerned citizen reportedly recognized the suspects and the child, brought them into their vehicle for safety, and contacted police.

At approximately 1:35 p.m., General Patrol officers located the child and two suspects at a strip mall in the 300 block of McPhillips Street. The child was transported to hospital in stable condition with no reported injuries.

Police identified the accused as Caitlin Cassandra Monkman, 30, and Kineisha Rose Jawbone, 25. Both face multiple charges, including abduction of a person under 14 years of age and assault with a weapon. Additional charges were announced, and both were detained in custody.

The Major Crimes Unit continues investigating.

The rapid public response highlights how emergency alerts mobilize residents and commuters across Manitoba within minutes.
