Joliet, Ill. – A fast-moving severe thunderstorm is sweeping across western Will County right now, bringing damaging wind gusts and hail that could quickly impact travel and property.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a Severe Thunderstorm Warning remains in effect until 10:30 a.m. CDT for western Will County. As of 9:52 a.m., the storm was located near New Lenox and moving east at nearly 50 mph, increasing the urgency for residents in its path.

The storm is capable of producing wind gusts up to 60 mph along with hail up to 1 inch in diameter, which has already been observed. These conditions can dent vehicles, damage roofs and siding, and bring down tree limbs, especially as the storm accelerates eastward.

Communities currently in the impact zone include Joliet, Romeoville, Lockport, New Lenox, Homer Glen, Mokena, and Channahon. Areas along key travel routes such as I-55 and nearby local roads may experience sudden visibility drops, debris, and slick conditions during heavy rain and hail bursts.

Residents are urged to take shelter immediately in an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building and stay away from windows. Drivers should avoid the area or delay travel as conditions can deteriorate within minutes.

The storm will continue moving east through the late morning hours, and additional warnings may be issued if new cells develop or intensify.
