Chicago Heights, Ill. – Severe thunderstorms are actively moving through Chicago’s south suburbs right now, bringing damaging wind gusts and hail that could impact travel and power across Cook and Will counties.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a Severe Thunderstorm Warning remains in effect until 10:30 a.m. CDT for southeastern Will and southeastern Cook counties. As of 9:53 a.m., storms were moving east at 30 to 50 mph, impacting areas including New Lenox, Frankfort, and Matteson.

Wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail up to 1 inch in diameter are the primary threats. These conditions can damage roofs, siding, and trees, while also posing a risk to vehicles and creating hazardous road conditions.

Communities in the storm’s path include Orland Park, Tinley Park, Chicago Heights, Lansing, Oak Forest, Homewood, and Calumet City. Major roadways such as I-57, I-80, and surrounding suburban routes may experience sudden visibility drops, debris, and slick pavement during heavier downpours.

Residents are urged to move indoors immediately and stay away from windows. Travel should be delayed if possible until storms pass, especially during peak intensity.

Storms will continue pushing east through mid-morning, and additional warnings may be issued if new cells develop or existing storms strengthen.
